PALMER, Bernard Ira (1910-1979) Acton 1927 (DL 1937); LA Education Officer 1948-1974
His main task with the LA was, successively, to integrate the new post-World War II Schools of Librarianship with the Association's educational programme as it developed and to prepare the way for internal examining. He was in fact the architect-in-chief of the modern system of professional education; when he retired it seemed as if a whole era had ended. He had special interest in classification and published Itself an education: six essays in classification (1962, 2nd edition 1971) and, jointly with J Mills, Fundamentals of library classification (1951). He was also joint editor, with D J Foskett, of the Sayers memorial volume (1961). He was made LA Honorary Fellow 1974.
